Wisdom/Judgment and Practical Christianity

When it comes to wisdom in the Christian tradition, we encounter seemingly conflicting messages. One scripture tells us, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10, NRSVue), while another declares, “God is love” (1 John 4:8, NRSVue) and “Perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18, NRSVue). Even within the wisdom literature, contradictions appear. Proverbs 26:5 advises, “Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him,” but the very next verse states, “Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes” (Proverbs 26:4-5, NRSVue).

Yet, a common thread runs throughout scripture: wisdom and understanding come from within. The Bible teaches that each of us is connected to a spirit of wisdom that is always accessible. The Apostle Paul even encourages us to pray for wisdom, saying, “I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him” (Ephesians 1:17, NRSVue).

Righteous Judgment and the Power of Discernment

This month, our theme at Folx with Faith focuses on our innate ability to judge rightly. This is not about judgmentalism but, as Jesus puts it, the ability to “judge with right judgment” (John 7:24, NRSVue). From a Christian perspective, this means making decisions not based on appearances but through discernment, ensuring that our choices reflect wisdom and love.

Righteous judgment is essential because it allows us to make clear and decisive choices about how to live our lives. It also strengthens our ability to stand up for truth and justice. Jesus did not remain silent in the face of oppression; he actively spoke out against injustice and encouraged us to care for the powerless, reminding followers of what the Law of Israel said, to treat the foreigner among us as we would our neighbor (Leviticus 19:34, NRSVue).

Jesus exercised wisdom by speaking in ways that resonated with ordinary people, showing them that the kingdom of God was for everyone. He challenged the religious elite, earning the label “a friend of sinners and a drunkard” (Matthew 11:19, NRSVue). This same Jesus calls us to follow him, embracing divine wisdom and discernment in our daily lives.

Asking for and Trusting Divine Wisdom

Recognizing wisdom as an indwelling power, we see that we can call on it whenever we need direction and guidance. The book of James makes this clear:

“If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you. But ask in faith, never doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.” (James 1:5-6, NRSVue)

We explored faith in January, understanding it as an unwavering conviction that God responds to our prayers. Wisdom operates the same way. The truth is, you already know what to do. The same spirit that created the universe dwells within you. Deep at the core of your being is an infinite supply of wisdom. When you seek God in the quiet place, you will always find the answers you need.

The Limits of External Wisdom

We can deepen our understanding by studying scripture and religious literature, but this can only take us so far. The Pharisees in Jesus’ time were well-versed in scripture, yet Jesus pointed out that they searched the texts believing they would find eternal life, yet failed to recognize him standing before them (John 5:39, NRSVue). Many who call themselves Christians today might not recognize the Christ even if he stood in front of them.

Charles Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, taught that right judgment is crucial, as it enables us to be decisive and avoid the painful consequences of sin. Seeking divine direction, coupled with faith in God’s guidance, helps us navigate life’s challenges with clarity and purpose.

Recognizing the Voice of Wisdom

How do we recognize the voice of wisdom? When asked this question, teacher and coach Iyanla Vanzant responded,

“Well, it sounds a lot like me.”

This is profound. Many seek a booming voice from the heavens, but in reality, God’s voice is often the still small voice within, whispering, “Go this way.”

Isaiah describes it this way:

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” (Isaiah 30:21, NRSVue)

This is faith in action—trusting that this is the way and stepping forward in confidence.

A Litmus Test for Spiritual Wisdom

How do we discern if we are truly following divine wisdom? A powerful measure is the fruit of the Spirit:

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23, NRSVue)

When making a decision, ask yourself:

  • Will this lead me to a greater experience of love?
  • Does it increase my joy and peace?
  • Is it a demonstration of patience?
  • Does this decision make me kinder and more generous?
  • Is my faithfulness strengthened?
  • Am I acting with gentleness and self-control?

These questions serve as a spiritual compass, guiding us toward right judgment.

Trusting Christ Within

Combine wisdom with faith and don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Many people hesitate, worried about getting it wrong. But faith reminds us: you are trusting in Christ, and Christ already got it right.

If a decision does not lead to the outcome you hoped for, you can always make another choice. Trust that God’s wisdom is always accessible and that each decision brings growth and learning.

Following Jesus means accepting that we are all humans doing the best we can with the wisdom we have. Even Jesus, in the Garden of Gethsemane, relied on faith and wisdom to face his trials. We, too, are called to trust that divine wisdom is guiding us forward.
