The Power of Imagination
Unlocking the Sacred Gift Within
This month, we are reflecting on the innate spiritual power of imagination. As Linda Martella-Whitsett, author of Divine Audacity, writes:
“Imagination is our powerful capacity to picture what can be and, by holding that idea and developing it until we feel its effects while it is yet unmanifest, to live into that idea until it essentially becomes our reality. In a sense, imagination is our primary power because it is essential for the cultivation of all our magnificent spiritual capacities.” ~Linda Martella-Whitsett, Divine Audacity
We often overlook imagination as a spiritual faculty, but when we explore both Hebrew and Christian scriptures, we discover it as a central theme. The sacred texts are filled with symbols, archetypes, and parables designed to awaken spiritual truths within us.
Parables, Prophets, and the Power to Envision
Nearly all of Jesus’ teachings relied on imagination. His use of parables brought the unseen realm of the divine into relatable stories that revealed deep spiritual principles. He painted pictures with words—images of mustard seeds, lost coins, and prodigal children—to describe the kingdom of God and what it means to live as a faithful follower.
Prophets and seers also relied on imagination as a divine tool. Daniel and Joseph are two shining examples who interpreted dreams using their “holy imagination.” These visions were not just metaphors—they were messages. Their stories remind us that God often speaks through images, symbols, and the intuitive faculties of our inner world.
Holy Imagination and the Mind of Christ
While empowerment sits at the core of many spiritual teachings, it’s essential to differentiate spiritual power from modern societal definitions. Often, society equates power with status or wealth. However, a majority of spiritual traditions consider these points of view related to power superficial or counterfeit. True empowerment is not about accumulating external things but about expressing ourselves in ways that profoundly impact others. Authentic power arises when we tap into our inner spiritual nature and express our innate creative spark.
Scripture reminds us that “we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16, NRSVue), and this means we have access to a sacred, creative imagination. Practical Christianity calls us to use that imagination in holy and healing ways. In a world saturated with conflicting messages and endless information, this ability is more vital than ever.
We’re constantly exposed to voices from social media, the news, and even religious authorities. It’s wise to pause and ask, Who is doing my thinking for me? What images and stories are playing in your mind—and where do they come from?
Try asking:
- What is God thinking about this that I am not thinking?
- What am I thinking about this that God is not thinking?
Fruit-Checking Our Thoughts
Jesus gave us a spiritual test: “You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16, NRSVue). This teaching applies not only to others but also to ourselves. When we examine the fruit of our thoughts, we can discern whether our imagination is aligned with divine truth or fear-based patterns.
Paul’s letter to the Galatians gives us a guide:
“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22–23, NRSVue).
These fruits are signs that our imagination is being shaped by divine wisdom. Ask yourself: Is my imagination helping me become more loving? More peaceful? More empowered? If not, it might be time to reset your inner narrative.
Sacred Brainwashing: A Different Kind of Renewal
There is a kind of “brainwashing” promoted in high-control religious settings—but practical Christianity invites us to something different: a sacred renewal of the mind.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.” —Psalm 51:10 (NRSVue)
“Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind.” —Romans 12:2 (NRSVue)
“…to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word.” —Ephesians 5:26 (NRSVue)
These verses suggest a divine “cleansing” that allows us to align our minds with the Christ Mind. When this alignment occurs, we move from being passive consumers of religious messaging to powerful co-creators of a better world.
You Are a Co-Creator with God
Creation wasn’t a one-time event—it’s ongoing, and you are part of it. Paul tells the Corinthians, “For we are God’s co-workers” (1 Corinthians 3:9, NRSVue). That means God creates through us, and our imagination is the canvas.
Years ago, I had a mentor tell me to just be creative and everything else will flow. I felt disconnected from my creative side and told her, “I don’t have anything to do to be creative.” She said, “Then make your bed creatively, and you’ll figure it out.” Creativity takes many forms. Whether it’s writing, painting, organizing, parenting, building businesses, or simply showing up for your community with compassion—creativity flows from intention.
When we engage our imagination consciously, we find divine solutions to everyday challenges. We see relationships with fresh eyes. We build inclusive spaces. We solve problems with grace. And it all begins by being curious: What is God imagining through me today?
Embracing Your Creative Path
You are meant to live a life of joy, peace, and divine fulfillment. These aren’t abstract promises—they’re spiritual realities waiting to unfold through you. Jesus embodied this truth, and you can too:
“Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.” —Philippians 2:5 (NRSVue)
Whether your imagination leads you to become a creative storyteller and teacher like Jesus or inspires you to make your bed creatively, follow it. That’s how we step into our divine identity—as expressions of holy imagination and sacred love.
