The Power Within
In a time of political uncertainty, a sense of cultural division, and constant digital distractions, many people are finding themselves feeling anxious, powerless, or adrift. It’s tempting to seek affirmation or try and find stability from the world around us. From relationships, institutions, or even breaking news. But the Christian and Hebrew scriptures remind us that our true power does not come from external circumstances. It comes from within. From the Spirit of God that dwells in us.
Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33, NRSVue) This is not a call to retreat from life but to anchor our lives in spiritual truth. When we align with Spirit, we tap into a source of power that is eternal, unconditional, and unshakable.
Inner Power, Not Outer Approval
We often look to others to affirm our worth, our choices, or our beliefs. But lasting empowerment isn’t found in the approval of others, it’s found in recognizing that we are already whole. Our power is not based on being right, popular, or in control. It is grounded in our relationship with the Divine.
Paul reminds us, “Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power.” (Ephesians 6:10) This strength is not aggressive or domineering, it is centered, calm, and clear. It is the power that comes from spiritual alignment, from listening deeply to the voice of Spirit.
This kind of power does not require us to dominate others, to win arguments, or to convince anyone of anything. It is a confidence that comes from knowing we are not alone and trusting that God is with us. Even when we don’t feel it. As Romans 8:38-39 assures us, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
God is Always Speaking
Jesus promised that the Spirit would guide us into all truth and declare what is to come (John 16:12-15). The Spirit doesn’t always speak in words. She can speak in synchronicities, signs, animals, numbers, songs, and the gentle nudges of our heart.
The bestselling author, Marianne Williamson, starts her day with this prayer: “Where would you have me go? What would you have me do? What would you have me say, and to whom?” A prayer like this can help us align our actions with divine will. It sets the intention to follow our own inner guidance, so we are not tossed about by the chaos of the world.
If your thoughts are stirred by fear, worry, or dread, that is not the voice of Spirit. The Spirit brings the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, and personal empowerment (Galatians 5:22-23).
If you feel struggled hearing the voice of Spirit, you may also want to include this affirmation: “I pay attention to the holy spirit’s guidance. I know this guidance is always available and all around me.” As we open our spiritual senses, we begin to notice the divine guidance embedded in everyday life: a phrase in a song, a passing conversation, a license plate, or the sudden appearance of a particular animal. God’s voice is all around us—we just have to learn how to listen.
The Strength to Face Uncertainty
When we’re overwhelmed by what might happen, Jesus reminds us: “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” (Matthew 6:34)
If you’re feeling ungrounded, try the 5-4-3-2-1 method:
- 5 things you can see
- 4 things you can touch
- 3 things you can hear
- 2 things you can smell
- 1 thing you can taste
Whatever stage you’re at right now is sacred. Don’t rush through it. Love is the ultimate goal and the power that supports you at every stage of your journey.
This brings us back to the present, where God is. God is not in the past, nor can we find God in an imagined future. The only place we find God is right here, right now.
When we live in the present, we find spiritual clarity. We stop trying to control what’s ahead and instead align with the rhythm of the Spirit. The Apostle Paul wrote, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20) This is the essence of personal power in the Christian life, allowing Spirit to guide, inspire, inform, and empower us in all that we do.
Empowerment is Alignment
Each of us has a role to play in this moment in history. But it’s not our job to fix everything or carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. We are responsible only for what is ours to do. When we align with Spirit, we can trust that we will be guided, equipped, and strengthened for our unique path.
When we are anxious about what’s ahead, remember: God always gives us what we need when we need it. If we don’t yet have the strength or the solution, it’s not yet our moment to act. Spirit is never late, and never early. Yet, to experience this ever present guidance of spirit, we must be open and available to it. If you feel disconnected from the voice of Spirit, this affirmative prayer might help:
“The holy spirit tells me everything I need to know and provides everything I need to take action when I need these things. This always happens in the right time and space sequence. All is well and I am safe.”
Anchored in Truth
Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” (John 8:32) This is not about doctrine, theology, or even a specific set of beliefs. It is about a deep inner knowing that comes from our inner connection with God.
When life feels overwhelming, hold tight to these promises:
- If you feel unworthy or alone, remember: Nothing can separate us from God’s love. (Romans 8:38-39)
- God’s love is the unifying force that flows through all of creation. It constantly motivates and guides me. Nothing can separate me from this power.
- If you’re uncertain about the future, trust: The Spirit will guide us into all truth. (John 16:12-15)
- My mind is directed by the spirit of truth, which leads me into all Truth.
- If circumstances feel chaotic, know: God works all things together for our good. (Romans 8:28)
- God is working everything together for my highest good. All is well and I am safe.
- If you feel weak or vulnerable, rest in this: God is faithful and will strengthen and guard us. (2 Thessalonians 3:3)
- God is my strength and my shield. I am strong enough to face anything in life. I know what is mine to do and God’s gives me the strength to do it.
- If you fear harm or danger, remember: We are protected; nothing shall harm us. (Psalm 91:7)
- I am always safe and protected in the loving arms of God.
- If you need a safe place, find it here: God is our refuge and strength. (Psalm 46:1)
- I spend time each day taking refuge in God. When I choose to look within, I find an infinite well of peace. In this space I am safe from all outer chaos.
- If you are tempted or overwhelmed, know: Evil flees when we resist. (James 4:7)
- I am connected to the presence of God within and the things that are out of sync with divine love flee from me.
- If you feel deprived, claim this: God will withhold no good thing. (Psalm 84:11)
- God provides me with every good and perfect gift. I open myself up and accept all of the good that this Life has to offer.
- If anxiety floods your heart, hold on: We are promised peace beyond understanding. (Philippians 4:7)
- I am one with the spirit of peace and I now have peace that surpasses all understanding.
- If your joy feels dimmed, be reminded: Our joy will be full. (John 15:11)
- I am connected with the source of joy and my joy is full. My life is joy!
- If you feel isolated, know: We are placed in supportive community. (Psalm 68:6)
- God surrounds me with a loving and caring community. I give my mental and emotional attention to those people that care for me.
- If you’re exhausted, remember: God gives us rest when we are weary. (Matthew 11:28-29)
- I rest in knowing that God is working things out for my good.
- If you’re unsure what to do next, trust: Wisdom is freely given to those who ask. (James 1:5)
- I am a child of God and as a child of God, wisdom is my divine right. When I do not know what to do, I seek wisdom and I know that I am guided. My mind is aligned with God’s mind.
- If something feels impossible, declare: With God, all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26)
- I release all fears and limitations. I am not my parents fears and limitations. I am not societies fears and limitations. I am not the fears and limitations of my religious upbringing. I am not even my own fears and limitations. I am a child of God. All things are working out for me and I know that with God, all things are possible. I embrace limitless blessing.
- If the world feels “too much,” take heart: Christ has already overcome the world. (John 16:33)
- Even amid seeming challenges in the world, I know that Christ in me has already overcome the world. I find my power in this truth. I do what is mine to do and trust God with the rest.
These truths can comfort and empower you! They remind us that we are all connected, we are supported and guided, and we are powerful. We are beloved expressions of Divine Love.
