Celebrating National Coming Out Day: Living Authentically as Expressions of Divine Love

Every person is a unique expression of divine love, holding within them the sacred light of individuality and authenticity. As we journey through life, discovering our identities, it’s vital to remember that we are here to be ourselves — not a replica of someone else’s expectations, ideals, or beliefs. Each of us came into this world to live as a one-of-a-kind reflection of the divine, full of purpose, meaning, and beauty.

Today, on National Coming Out Day, we celebrate this authenticity. We honor the courage it takes to embrace who we are, whether we are fully out, partially out, or still exploring what it means to come out at all. The journey to live as our true selves is as diverse and unique as each of us, and for some, coming out is a necessary step in living authentically. For others, there may be many reasons to postpone coming out, such as finding the right support systems, being in the right community, or feeling fully ready. Sometimes the bravest act is simply acknowledging your truth to yourself.

Coming Out as a Sacred Choice

The act of coming out is not a requirement to live authentically; it’s a choice — a sacred decision that each person has the right to make for themselves, on their own terms, and at their own pace. For some, coming out is a profound spiritual moment: a shedding of societal expectations, a breaking free of the closet’s confining walls, and an emerging into the light of self-acceptance. For others, the process is slow and winding, taking place in small, sacred spaces where safety and support are assured.

The decision to come out can feel both liberating and terrifying, filled with possibilities for connection, healing, and freedom, but also risks of rejection, misunderstanding, or even risk. This is why the journey must be navigated thoughtfully, with care and consideration for one’s emotional, physical, and spiritual safety. There is no “right” time, no universal moment when everyone should come out — there is only your time.

Honoring the Courage of Coming Out

Today, we honor the courage and strength it takes to come out as an authentic expression of divine love. Coming out is a profound and transformative experience, one that requires immense bravery, vulnerability, and self-acceptance. We celebrate those who have chosen to share their truth with the world and acknowledge the powerful impact that living authentically can have on one’s life and the lives of those around them.

Coming out is not just about a single moment; it is a journey that unfolds over time, marked by countless acts of courage. It is an opportunity to fully embrace who you are and to find a supportive community that celebrates your identity. Folx with Faith is here to walk with you on this journey, providing resources, community, and love as you step into your truth.

Finding the Right Support

Coming out is a deeply personal journey, and having the right support can make all the difference. Surrounding yourself with people who understand and affirm your identity can help make the coming-out process a more positive and empowering experience. A supportive network can include family, friends, faith leaders, therapists, or online communities — people who will celebrate your journey and offer practical support.

As you prepare to come out, consider seeking out those who:

  • Affirm and honor your identity without pressure.
  • Listen deeply and compassionately to your experiences.
  • Validate your decisions and offer encouragement.
  • Provide practical support, like being there during difficult conversations.
  • Respect your privacy and boundaries.

Creating a Strategic Coming Out Plan

Coming out is a significant step, and creating a strategic plan can help you feel more prepared and supported as you move forward. Here are some steps to consider as you develop your plan:

  1. Write Down a Strategic Plan: Take some time to reflect on your reasons for coming out and what you hope to achieve. Writing down your thoughts and goals can help you clarify your intentions and feel more empowered. Consider outlining who you want to come out to, how you plan to do it, and what you would like to say.
  2. Identify a Planned Support Group: Surrounding yourself with supportive people is crucial. Identify friends, family members, or trusted individuals who you believe will affirm your identity. Let them know in advance that you are planning to come out and may need their support during and after the process.
  3. Reach Out to LGBTQI+ Organizations: LGBTQI+ organizations can provide invaluable resources and support as you prepare to come out. Reach out to groups like The Trevor Project, PFLAG, or local LGBTQI+ centers for guidance, counseling, and community connections.
  4. Have a Backup Plan: It’s important to prepare for the possibility that things may not go as expected. Consider what you will do if someone reacts negatively or if you feel unsafe. Identify a safe space where you can go if needed, and make sure you have contact information for supportive friends or professionals.
  5. Incorporate a Spiritual Practice: Coming out is an act of profound self-love, and incorporating a spiritual practice can help you stay centered and grounded. Consider meditating, praying, or engaging in another spiritual ritual that helps you connect with divine wisdom. Trust that you are always guided and supported in everything you do, and allow this sense of connection to bring you peace and strength.

A Prayer for Strength and Safety

May you feel surrounded by love, comforted by peace, and held in the knowledge that your journey is yours alone. May you find support in the people you trust, and may your coming out be met with acceptance, understanding, and celebration — when and if you decide to share your truth. Until then, may you rest in the assurance that you are always a sacred expression of divine love, no matter where you are in your journey.

You are loved, exactly as you are.
